Some older folks tend to take aging as a sign that it’s time to slow down – to stop maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle, and just take their time and rest. After all, retirement is retirement, right? Might as well sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of a life of work.

In fact, by beginning a physical fitness regimen before the age of 65, you can lower your risk for a variety of diseases and physical ailments, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and other chronic conditions.

And a healthy regimen of physical activity doesn’t mean you have to start trying to bench-press 200lbs after retirement – for older folks, even going for a walk for a half-hour each day can have significant effects on health and wellbeing.

Staying active isn’t just about mental health. And while there is research that shows physical exercise can improve your mental state, it’s just as important to exercise your mind as it is to exercise your muscles.

Participating in these sorts of activities and adjusting your lifestyle to accept some of the effects of aging can allow you to stay “younger” for longer – especially compared to sedentary seniors who are not only much more likely to suffer poorer mental health, including depression and mood swings, and to suffer physical ailments heart disease, kidney problems, and muscle atrophy.

This is true no matter the age of the senior – for example, a 75 year-old who has been active for the last ten years will almost always be more healthy than a 65 year-old who has not been active at all – by beginning a preventative regimen of mental, physical, and social activity, you can quite literally add years onto your lifespan.
