New Research Discovers The Health Benefits Of Avocado Seed Husks

When you look at culinary uses of avocados, you will discover that it follows a particular pattern. The flesh is considered as good, while the skin and seed are labeled "bad". But though most people only eat the delicious middle part (the flesh) of an avocado, the giant avocado seed may have more benefits than we previously thought. Recently, a team of scientists discovered that the avocado seed husks is packed with potentially valuable compounds that are beneficial to human health.

Avocado seed husks is often considered as one of the most disposable parts of the fruit. The seeds themselves can be processed to yield oil, but the husks are normally thrown away. However a recent research by Debasish Bandyopadhyay, a Chemist at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, discovers that those husks actually contain more than 130 compounds, that can be beneficial to humans. To a lay man, compounds like Docosanol, Lauric acid, and Heptacosane might not sound familiar, but those molecules are potent enough to fight cold sores, raise good cholesterol and potentially fight cancer respectively.

Though the first two compounds have been found in other parts of the avocado, however, the last one cannot be found in avocado flesh, hence illustrating the untapped potential of the avocado seed husks.

It could very well be that avocado seed husk, which must people consider as the waste of wastes, are actually the gem of gems because the medicinal compounds within them could eventually be used to treat cancer, heart disease and other heart conditions

Bandyopadhyay was quoted as saying by American Chemical Society (ACS), which hosted the national meeting when his research was presented.

The scientist claimed that he and his team found a number of molecules that could be useful in other ways as well. .

Our result also suggest that the seed husks are a potential source of chemicals used in plastics and other industrial products

And apart from the already discovered uses, Bandyopadhyay believes that some of the molecules they discovered might become even more useful if they were modified into other compounds. In all, the American Chemical Society said it believes avocado seed husks could be a "gold mine" if used judiciously.
