Losing weight is no mean feat, keeping it off is! According to researchers, people tend to weigh more two years after losing weight. The reason is that once the weight is off, they get in a comfort zone and, consciously or unconsciously, overlook their everyday eating habits or exercise regime. Keeping off weight requires different strategies and it involves a lot of psychology. You need to do it for yourself. Make few things like exercise or healthy eating a priority for you and do not compromise on it. There will be times when you’d like to take a break and when you feel like it, give yourself one! Here are a few tricks that will help you keep the excess weight off.
1. Weigh Yourself Regularly
Remember how everyone told you not to step on the scale every other day? Well, according to a research stepping on the scale daily is an effective strategy for those trying to maintain their weight. Weighing yourself regularly will help you take a prompt action as soon as you see a few pounds creeping back. However, don’t let the number on the scales mess with your head.
Make sure you weigh yourself in the morning, after you used the toilet. Weigh yourself wearing the same clothes everyday. But be mindful of daily weight fluctuations that happen to everyone. These weight fluctuations are mostly dependent on your water intake, your bowel movements and, in the case of women, cyclical changes.
Don’t let these changes get you down as they are pretty normal. If stepping on the scale everyday is not your thing, make sure you weigh yourself every two weeks.
2. Keep a Food Diary
We all know that when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, what you eat matters a lot. After you have reached your target weight, it is okay to let yourself have a cheat day. This is to keep off any cravings you might have. Maintain a food journal and note down everything you eat.
From a single bite of pasta to that big bowl of popcorn you had, write down everything. This will keep you abreast of what you have been eating, your portioning and your general food trends. You can easily modify your diet, by correlating it with any weight fluctuations you see. Include fiber-rich foods in your diet, drink lots of water and have a healthy breakfast to set the tone of the day.
3. Exercise Regularly
People who exercise regularly tend to keep off their weight easily as opposed to people who don’t. Controlling your diet is the most important thing when it comes to maintaining weight, but without a good exercise regime it can become unfruitful.
Try to aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise. Brisk walking has been the most popular exercise amongst dieters, but you can have your pick, as long as it is for 30 minutes. Combine it with strength training and you are good to go!
Keeping off weight is all about discipline and giving your body the attention that it needs. So eat healthy and exercise regularly and you’ll keep the weight off!
