Genital herpes like we all know, is a disease that is transmitted by an infected person to another uninfected person through unprotected sexual intercourse. Or simply put, it is a sexually transmitted diseases (STD). During the onset of an infection, this sexually transmitted disease is initially asymptomatic (meaning it shows no visible symptoms), and the symptoms only starts to appear when the infection have spread internally to most parts of the body system.

The virus that causes genital herpes is known as the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). When the virus enters the body, it tends to invade the body system (just like other pathogens), fights the immune system, which eventually leads to manifestation to various disorders in the form of visible signs and symptoms. In order to prevent further complications caused by this virus, it is wise to have the knowledge of the early signs then seek for medications in order to eradicate the activities of the virus in the body system.

Briefly, in this post, we shall be looking at some symptoms of genital herpes. if anyone is experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it is best for such person to seek for medical attention before the situation gets worsen. The various symptoms are as follows:

Symptoms of genital herpes

1. Lesions
The primary symptom of genital herpes is the development of lesions on some parts of the skin.  The major part of the skin that is been affected is the genital area, the rectum, and sometimes it can also be found on the mouth of the infected person. The lesions first of all start as a small cyst, then it later turns into a pustule (being filled with pus), then eventually it turns into a painful ulcer which crust and heal on its own without leaving a scar. The lesions can present itself on the skin for an average period of 17 days for men and 20 days for women.

2. Itching
The presence of the lesions causes irritation that leads to itching. Itching at the various sites of the skin that have lesions is very common.

3. Fever and malaise
A herpes infection also manifest itself just like flu, with symptoms ranging from fever and malaise. In most times, infected patients also exhibit symptoms such as muscle pain (myalgia) and headache.

4. Dysuria
Patients that are been infected by the herpes simplex virus often experience painful urination (dysuria) whenever they try to pass out urine. Many times, primary infection caused by herpes simplex virus in the cervix area is been confused with other STDs like Neisseria gonorrhoea  and Chlamydia trachomatis. To differentiate both cases, infections caused by the two later organisms often present itself with dysuria and inflammation, unlike the former.

5. Swelling of the lymph nodes
A person infected with the herpes simplex various always have a swollen lymph nodes. The swelling of the lymph nodes always appear a week after the infection.

6, Clear and mucoid discharge
Apart from the symptoms mentioned above, a smelly discharge is an additional characteristics of an herpes infection. The discharge that comes out from the genitals is usually smelly and have a mucoid texture.
